FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please note, all FAQs are subject to change. Information may vary based on itinerary, location, ship, seasonality, and themed or specialty voyages. For World Cruise FAQs please see the Before You Sail Guide for the specific sailing.

Premium Plan

Are there any restrictions on the Premium Plan?

Both Premium and Standard Plans have security restrictions in place to protect user experience and the integrity of the ship's network. These controls are based on industry best practices and may limit access to certain sites considered a security risk.

Is the Premium Plan refundable if not used after purchase?

Premium plans are non-refundable; once purchased, they cannot be refunded or exchanged.

Are VPNs, remote desktop connection software, or similar applications restricted on the Premium Plan?

Major client VPN business applications and remote desktop connections are allowed, though restrictions may apply depending on the specific application, particularly VPNs used for anonymization.

Can I access streaming services on the Premium Plan?

Access to video-streaming apps depends on internet availability in the area. However, it is important to remember that the user experience may differ from when you are at home due to the use of a different IP address. Certain streaming platforms may not operate abroad.

How many devices can be connected to the Premium Plan?

The Premium Plan allows for a total of 10 devices, with up to 4 devices connected simultaneously.

What is the internet speed of the Premium Plan?

The maximum internet speed varies based on satellite availability and weather conditions at the time of measurement. Premium users generally have an advantage over standard users in accessing available bandwidth.

How much does the Premium Plan cost?

The Premium Plan costs $20 per day or $100 for a package of 7 days.

Standard Plan

What is the difference between Standard and Premium Plans?

Internet onboard cannot match the speed available on land. On land, there are multiple providers and technologies, whereas onboard, only satellite connectivity is available, especially in remote destinations. We ensure fair usage of the available internet to our guests and crew. When internet usage is low, the experience on both the Standard and Premium Plans is similar. However, during times of high demand or limited availability, the Premium Plan offers an advantage over the Standard Plan. While the Standard Plan will continue to function, it may have reduced bandwidth, and certain services such as streaming may not be accessible.

How many devices can be connected to the Standard Plan?

The Standard Plan permits a total of 10 devices, with up to 3 devices connected simultaneously.

What is the internet speed of the Standard Plan?

The maximum internet speed varies based on satellite availability and weather conditions.

How much does the Standard Plan cost?

The Standard Plan is complimentary for all guests.

During Voyage

Can I hold a video conference?

Video conferencing is subject to bandwidth availability and restrictions may apply depending on the specific application used.

Are there any app or website restrictions?

Internet access onboard is shared among all passengers and the ship, and certain links are restricted to protect the network from potential threats. Restrictions may include proxy servers for anonymization, high-risk applications, peer-to-peer connections, encrypted DNS, and access to illegal or questionable websites. It is important to note that onboard usage may differ significantly from what is experienced at home or in one's home country.

What is available on the in-suite televisions (TVs)

We offer live satellite TV with select channels for your viewing. These include on-demand movies, miniseries, recorded lectures, safety information, daily news from our Cruise Directors, and information on the port of call. Please note, specific channel and station availability is dependent on the ship's location and local regulations.

Will there be internet/mobile phone coverage on my shore excursion or tour?

In select ports, free Wi-Fi is offered in the Cruise Terminal and at the airports. For phone service, we suggest you check with your carrier to confirm whether you have access to international phone calls, email, and text messaging. There is always a possibility that in some extreme areas the signal is either considerably slower or unavailable. Guests will be notified of this in advance by the ship's staff.

Why is the onboard internet different from the internet on shore?

Satellite communication is weather-sensitive. For example, during rain, snow, or heavy cloud cover, satellite connections can become very poor or cease to function altogether. Additionally, each vessel is almost always in motion, while the coverage of each satellite is limited. When a ship moves out of the coverage area of one satellite and into another, internet speed and reliability may be compromised. Furthermore, in some remote areas, satellites may not be available at all, while in others, they may be blocked for political or security reasons by local authorities, over which cruise lines have no control. Crystal employs various internet carriers onboard, including traditional geostationary satellites, modern low-earth orbit satellites (such as Starlink), and 4G/5G antennas with international roaming agreements or local carriers. These different channels are combined using specific equipment to shift traffic to the channel with the best performance. However, despite these efforts, it is not always possible to guarantee that internet coverage will be available or perform well.

How can I keep up with the latest information during my voyage?

Information is provided on your in-suite tablets.

Wi-Fi Capability

Can I upload/download videos?

Video upload and download capabilities depend on bandwidth availability and cannot be guaranteed. Premium packages typically offer more reliability in this regard compared with standard ones.

What internet providers are used on the ships?

The ships use Telenor and Starlink as satellite internet providers.

Browsing

Is unlimited data offered onboard?

There is no predefined limit on the amount of data a user can download. However, the amount of data that a user can download or upload at any given time is subject to the available bandwidth and concurrent usage. The available bandwidth is distributed based on requests from both Premium and Standard Plans, with priority given to premium users.
